Pahalgam Attack—Cricketing Ties Under Scrutiny

In the wake of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that claimed 26 lives on April 22, 2025, diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan have reached a new low.
The assault, targeting tourists in the scenic Baisaran Valley, has not only intensified geopolitical strains but also cast a shadow over the future of cricketing engagements between the two nations.
The Attack and Its Aftermath
On April 22, militants opened fire on a group of tourists in Baisaran, near Pahalgam, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuring over a dozen others.
The Resistance Front, a group believed to be affiliated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack, vowing to identify and punish those responsible. “The perpetrators and their backers will face retribution beyond their imagination,” Modi stated during a public gathering in Bihar.
In response, India has taken several measures: suspending the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, closing borders, and expelling Pakistani defense officials.
A large-scale manhunt has been launched, with approximately 1,500 individuals detained across Jammu and Kashmir.
Cricketing Relations Under Strain

The attack has reignited debates over the cricketing ties between India and Pakistan. Historically, the two nations have only faced each other in International Cricket Council (ICC) and continental events since their last bilateral series in 2012-13.
The high-stakes nature of India-Pakistan matches often draws significant global attention.
Speculations arose that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had approached the ICC to ensure India and Pakistan are not placed in the same group in future tournaments.
However, a report in Cricbuzz refuted these claims, quoting a top BCCI official: “Such a development is news to him.
The BCCI authorities are sensitive to the prevailing national mood but as things stand, there is no truth to the speculation.”
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla emphasized the board’s alignment with the government’s stance, stating, “We are with the victims and we condemn it.
Whatever our government will say, we will do. We don’t play with Pakistan in bilateral series because of the government stand.
And we will not play with Pakistan in bilaterals going forward. But when it comes to ICC events, we play due to ICC engagement.”
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also expressed condolences over the attack, stating, “The cricketing community is deeply shocked and anguished by the tragic loss of innocent lives in the gruesome terror attack at Pahalgam yesterday.
On behalf of the BCCI, while condemning this ghastly and cowardly act with strongest possible words, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls.”
Upcoming Tournaments and Neutral Venues
There is no major men’s ICC event scheduled for this year. The Women’s World Cup is set to be played in India in September-October, with Pakistan having qualified.
As per earlier agreements, Pakistan will play its matches at a neutral venue. Before that, the men’s Asia Cup, where India is the designated host, will also be held at a neutral venue.
The BCCI has made it clear that it will not send the Indian team to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025, citing security concerns.
This decision has led to tensions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which has threatened to boycott all matches with India if the BCCI refuses to send its team for the tournament.
International Reactions and Diplomatic Fallout
The Pahalgam attack has drawn widespread condemnation from global leaders, including those from the US, UK, and China.
The incident has disrupted a period of relative calm and growing tourism in the region. Calls for retaliation are growing domestically in India, though experts warn that any military response could escalate tensions further between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
Pakistan has denied involvement in the attack, accusing India of making baseless accusations.
In retaliation to India’s measures, Pakistan has canceled Indian visas, suspended trade, and closed its airspace to Indian aircraft.
Wrapping It Up
The Pahalgam terrorist attack has not only resulted in tragic loss of life but has also intensified the already strained relations between India and Pakistan.
As both nations navigate the aftermath, the future of their cricketing engagements remains uncertain, reflecting the broader geopolitical tensions that continue to define their relationship.
